Clambering Mind (Tufthunting Mind)
【Sutra on the Surangama Mantra That is Spoken from above the Crown of the Great Buddha's Head, and on the Hidden Basis of the Tathagata's Myriad Bodhisattva Practices That Lead to Their Verifications of Ultimate Truth】consists of the big secret of cultivation skills. 【The Surangama Sutra】has one important point, that is the method of Cultivation Verification. Insights, Cultivation Verification, Practice Vows are all included in this classic Sutra.
【The Surangama Sutra】Volume 1: “The Buddha told Ananda, all sentient beings, since time without beginning, have naturally been undergoing all kinds of turbulence and karma, like gathering with demons (Yaksha). Various cultivators, cannot achieve Supreme Bodhi, become deviated from Sravaka Pratyeka, and become non-Buddhist, various Heavenly Devil Kings and their family dependants, as a result of their ignorance of two fundamentals, practise in wrong and chaotic ways. Similar to cooking with sand, with the desire to become gourmet food, having encountered infinite (like dust in the air) Kalpas, evidently failing to achieve anything. Ananda, what are the two? The first is the root of beginningless birth and death, which is the Clambering Mind (Tufthunting Mind) that you and all sentient beings now make use of, taking it to be the self-nature. The second is the primal pure substance of the beginningless Bodhi Nirvana. It is the primal bright essence of consciousness that can bring forth all conditions. Because of conditions, you consider it to be lost. All sentient beings lose sight of the original brightness. Therefore, though they cultivate to the end of their days, they are unaware of it, and without intending to they enter the various destinies.” |

Why can’t we purify our mind and envision the true nature? Since the infinite beginning, there is something in our lives that is working away: the Clambering Mind (Tufthunting Mind), with one thought connecting to another. Due to the fact that our thoughts are non-stop, we are thinking even when we are sleeping, this is the Clambering Mind (Tufthunting Mind). The majority of people mistakenly consider this as the original mind.
The Buddha said, “this type of mind is a phenomenon which is the function created within the noumenon.” The original mind of life is instinctively called Bodhi, and known as the noumenon. The Phenomena transmitted by it can be divided into sections, which actively jumps like the electric current. One should not try to catch this phenomenon, one should turn around to recognise the noumenon.
