To Let Go

Rinpoche’s discourse in Feb-1992
2005-01-01(after 13 years) uploaded in website

A blind man was walking over a bridge. Accidentally, he was pushed and fell out of the bridge, but he hurriedly managed to grab hold of the rail and was left hanging. In fact, the bridge was not really that high and the river bed was already dry. However, the blind man did not realize this.

To Let Go

A passer-by said, “You let go of your hand and jump!  It’s dry land underneath and the bridge is not that high from the ground.” However, the blind man did not believe him. Another passer-by came along and said, “Let go of your hand and let me pull you up.” The blind man also refused and stubbornly held onto the rail. All the bystanders ran out of ideas. They could do nothing, gave a deep sigh and then walked off.

The blind man could not climb up himself. When he was finally exhausted and could not grab hold of the rail any longer, his hand slipped and he fell down. As he was falling, he thought he was definitely going to die. Therefore, in an instant, all his thoughts turned into emptiness. All his worries and sufferings suddenly disappeared. He then realized what had happened, he should have let go earlier.

Postscript:

  1. We may all laugh at this blind man’s foolishness and stupidity. However, in reality, many of us are just like him or her; we obstinately hold onto something and do not let go!  The only difference is what thing we refuse to let go of.
  2. At times, during Rinpoche’s discourses, we are told to ‘Let Go’ and not to be ‘stubborn’, we do not listen. When we are finally wide-awake, two common situations may occur: either we are no longer under the guidance of our Rinpoche or our Rinpoche has passed away!!
