Proper Knowledge and View
after the Correspondence
of
Cultivating the Jambhala Practice
(Part 2)
What does Rinpoche mean by saying such a metaphor? He would like to tell you not to make extravagant demand that you can get without any ‘labour’! At least, you have to pay a little ‘labour’ force as well. Do a little work and make a little money to buy a steel helmet. If you do not go to work but wish upon the sky every day hoping that the Jambhalas will grant you wealth, or perhaps you do not want to go to work day and night but look forward to winning the lottery suddenly so that glory, splendor, wealth and rank will flock in in an instant. Due to the power of bad karma in one’s past lives, one is in poverty and distress in this life which in turn results in the lack of money in this life to practise Dana (donation). If one does not do any Dana, not even a little bit, or maybe one has ever made some Dana which one thinks that it is considerably big and much. In the eyes of the Jambhalas, the Dana you have made is perhaps only a smattering that is not worth mentioning. As a result, praying round the clock to the Jambhalas for bestowing you wealth is only an extravagant hope. Staying at home every day instead of going to work, one cultivates the Jambhala Practice and chants the Jambhala mantras all day long hoping that the Jambhalas can grant oneself great wealth and possessions. In that case, one does not need to worry about food, clothing, housing and transportation (the basic necessities of life) anymore without the need to do any labour services in the coming days. In fact, this is also the hope of many practitioners. However, practitioners have forgotten to consider the power of virtue they achieved in their previous lives. Even if you have already donated a little money, made offerings to the Guru, sponsored Buddhist centres and endowed plenty of charitable works concerning Buddhism in this life, you may not (necessarily) receive the return for cause and effect immediately in this life. Practitioners are advised to calm down and think about this thoroughly. For practitioners who do not cultivate to give offerings up to Buddhas and Bodhisattvas as well as below to the six paths of sentient beings or accumulate merits and virtues in doing good deeds, even when the Jambhalas move a piece of golden brick in front of you, the golden brick will become a cob brick (because your karma made you unable to see the golden brick). Hence, granting that the Jambhalas are willing to help you, it is still useless! This is because you lack the field of blessedness for piling up the blessings. The only worry is that practitioners grumble the various Buddhas and Bodhisattvas as well as the Jambhalas for not satisfying their wishes. They then suspect that the Jambhala Practice is a cheating stuff and Esoteric Buddhism does not deserve the fame. Thus, they have slandered Vajrayana which in turn plant a very serious karma that derives the consequence of ‘karma bears karma’. This makes them even poorer in addition to the previous poverty in their next life. This is because you have offended the Jambhalas (guardian deities of Vajrayana)! |
| ‘Proper Knowledge and View’ before cultivating the Jambhala Practice | ||
| This is the basic knowledge that one should acquire before cultivating the Practice and having Correspondence, | ||
| First | : | Vowing to devote the mind to Bodhi is of the first most importance. One is practising for the justice and benefits of all sentient beings, that is, for sentient beings who have a mind-set of seeking a fortune (as the practitioner is also one of the sentient beings, he/she is thus benefited subsequently) and so as to help attain the state of Buddhahood in the future. |
| Second | : | In order to accomplish the achievement mentioned, one has to complete Dana Paramita (The Perfection of Generosity) first. That is one should have to possess the good deeds and good intention of Dana. |
| Third | : | To make the completion of that Paramita (Dana Paramita) so as to enjoy abundance and augmentation, one has to cultivate the Jambhala Practice until the attainment of siddhi is obtained (that is the acquisition of worldly wealth). During the process of cultivating the Jambhala Practice, one not only acquires widening of mind and expansion of blessed virtues, but also converts the contaminated greed into the purity of compassion. |
| The cultivation of blessings and doing good deeds has to be possessed with proper cognition, proper heart-giving and proper motivation. To accumulate merits and virtues, we have to practise all blessed virtues and good deeds extensively so that we can change the intrinsic quality of our inherent nature of mind into those of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas as well as Jambhala Yidams gradually. With only the coordination of such consistent practices as well as cultivation of the Jambhala Practice can Correspondence be able to take place. One can impel abundant worldly wealth so that one does not have to worry or anxious about the lack of anything. If one does not do so, the cultivation of the Jambhala Practice can merely bring about the planting of good roots and impel little blessed reward in the future. Even if there is a little blessed reward of worldly wealth, this tiny bit of blessed reward wealth and possessions may however be the origin of one’s evil act and depravity. Adding to and fitting with the greed, foolishness, wicked ideas, erroneous thinking, evil karma, habits etc. in one’s previous and present lives, all these conducts may easily steer oneself into dark abyss which in turn drives one farther away from the happy and bright future. It is better to cultivate the bestowing of food simultaneously with the cultivation of the Jambhala Practice so that one can give Dana to sentient beings by means of food donation. This fulfills the principle of ‘self-saving, saving others,’. The ways of bestowing food do not confine only to Lhasang Smoke Offering Puja or Fire Puja in Esoteric Buddhism, Buddhist rituals like Meng Shan giving food etc. in Exoteric Buddhism are also acceptable. Besides the aforementioned, one practises Dana, helps some ‘decent and proper’ charitable and rescue works in the world. In addition, when one encounters people whose financial capacity is relatively poor or beggars, one can take the initiation to give them moderate Dana as well. The demand of destroying one’s evil karma first is a prerequisite of cultivating the Jambhala Practice. Destroying all evil karma thoroughly is a precondition for the perfection of one’s fortune. Moreover, it is the secret of success of the Jambhala Practice. Furthermore, it is the knack for the various Buddhas and Bodhisattvas to grant one a fortune. Hence, the cultivation of the Jambhala Practice in Vajrayana should also be started from one’s heart by renouncing evilness and turning oneself to virtue. One should confess all evil karma one has done and build up the meritorious virtue of practising sukla-dharma (the correct doctrine that is told by the Buddha). As one tries hard to nurture one’s moral integrity as well as purify one’s conscience, one will have the arising of the Perfection of Wisdom to achieve the state of Buddhahood. When the timing is right and one’s opportunity encounters, one will naturally become rich without beseeching for it! |
|
| ‘Proper Knowledge and View’ after having Correspondence in the Jambhala Practice | |
| One should perform philanthropies extensively that aims at benefiting sentient beings frequently as well as rescuing them. After having a fortune, one should not covet comfort and pleasure for oneself and enjoy the comfortable and happy life selfishly like taking a round-the-world tour which is large in scale or a small-scaled one such as travelling for recreation frequently among the territory. This lessens one’s time to chant mantras as well as neglecting one’s Yidam Practice (though one still cultivates it) and also the Jambhala Practice. One will then lose one’s ‘initial heart-giving’.
