Have genuinely offered to the Buddha? Have really offered to the Guru? |
| One day, a follower who seldom attended group cultivation of the Centre came and asked to see Rinpoche.
The follower said to Rinpoche with his face lit up with joy, “Rinpoche, I’ve known a lady recently whose appearance fits in with my requirements. I fell in love with her at first sight. She must be the other half of my life! Would Rinpoche please give me the blessing to win the beauty soon so that we can get married as quickly as possible?”
Rinpoche said, “Good. Since you’ve encountered a girlfriend whom you’re a hit with, I’ll certainly give you my blessing. Do you have her photograph in hand now? I can give you the blessing immediately (if you have one).”
The follower answered, “I’ve only met her once in her working place and I got to know her name simply from her employee card. Although I haven’t had an opportunity to ask her out on a date yet, a relationship can be nurtured gradually. Though I haven’t understood her family background yet, I’d be able to see all her relatives and friends during the banquet on our wedding day. Although…, … . Though …, …”
Rinpoche asked the follower a rhetorical question, “Oh! You happen to have met her for only once, how can you reach the extent of discussing marriage (with her)?”
The follower looked as if he had realized something, he said, “Well, I see! Rinpoche, you don’t need to drop any hints.”
Taking off the gold watch he was wearing on his wrist at once, the follower walked hurriedly towards the altar and put the watch on it, he then said, “I understand rules of Esoteric Buddhism. I hereby offer the gold watch as an offering to express my sincerity.”
(Note: Putting the gold watch in front of the statues of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, is it possible that Buddhas and Bodhisattvas need to wear a watch? ! It is unsuited to Vajrayana rules to put the gold watch which has not been purified on the Buddhist table (altar). Moreover, Rinpoche does not wear any watch basically. Hence, even if you offer him one, it will also be returned.)
Rinpoche advised and explained to that follower repeatedly hoping that he would understand that his wish was unreasonable fundamentally. However, the follower was all the time so stubborn that he insisted on asking for Rinpoche’s blessing to accomplish his marriage. Finally, he said, “I’ve made an appointment with a friend but I’ve no idea what the time is now.” After that, he went towards the altar and took the gold watch, which he put on the altar as an offering just before, to have a look at the time. He said in surprise, “Oops! It’s the time now; I’m going to be late! Rinpoche, I’m afraid I’ve to leave. That’s it; my request has been settled in this way. A promise is a promise!” Still holding the watch he got back from the altar a short time ago in hand, he then dashed out of the Shrine (Centre) hastily.
After some time, that follower came again. ‘(He was the sort of person who) Never goes to the temple for no reason’. He appeared in the Centre to complain to Rinpoche that his business was on the decline. He begged in every possible way to invite Rinpoche to his shop to take a look at the fung shui so that his business would be flourished and profits would pour in from all sides under the blessing of Rinpoche. Rinpoche did not practise fung shui for people. However, in order to fulfill the wishes of sentient beings as well as having pity on the follower (who had fallen on hard times), Rinpoche managed to find time in an evening amongst his extremely busy Buddhist affairs to go over to his shop once. After giving blessing to the follower, Rinpoche was going to leave when the follower said, “Rinpoche, please stop for a while. I know the rules of Esoteric Buddhism; I’ve to make offerings to you so as to show my sincerity.”
Hardly had his voice faded away, he took the mango readily from the fruit tray that was consecrated in front of the God of earth and handed it over immediately to Rinpoche to dedicate it as an offering of his practising fung shui.
Rinpoche accepted it respectfully. When Rinpoche was leaving the shop slowly, the follower said as well, “Walk slowly and please return (by yourself). Disciple is not going with you.”
Rinpoche tranquilly turned around and said to him, “Please help thank the God of earth for me!”
There appeared a puzzled vision in the eyes of the follower. (May be he was thinking, “Why is it not saying thank you to me?”)
Seeing the empty fruit tray of the God of earth at the instant when turning around, Rinpoche could not bear to see that the only fruit which belonged to the God of earth was gone. Venerable Rinpoche then walked hurriedly towards the God of earth and stooped down humbly to put the mango back on the fruit tray in front of the God of earth before he left.
Rinpoche has never minded being treated without proper respect and is played with like a mouse. Whatever done is helpful to sentient beings, Rinpoche will try his very best to do so hoping that he/she can forge Buddhist link or simply lay the basis for connection with Rinpoche. However, whether the condition formed is of good karma or a bad one after all, it can only be judged by the persons concerned! |

Request learning the ‘millennium turning wheel method of chanting mantra’ |
| One day, a lay disciple came in front of Rinpoche to request learning the ‘millennium turning wheel method of chanting mantra’.
Rinpoche thought for a short while before he asked that lay disciple, “The method you’ve asked to learn is very simple and easy. By the way, have you ever been to the United States?”
The lay disciple answered, “Yes, I have. I’ve been to denomination centres of some religious sects and some Buddhist temples. I’ve also gone travelling there.”
Rinpoche asked again, “In that case, have you ever been to the state of Texas in the United States?”
The lay disciple said, “Well, not yet. Nevertheless, I’ve seen in films that it’s in the western part of America where most local residents like to dress themselves up in ‘cowboys’.”
Rinpoche told the lay disciple, “If you want to learn this way of chanting mantras, you must go to America again. Go to Texas once and learn from the ‘cowboys’ there the way they rotate a piece of rope strongly in the air.” |
The lay disciple had a puzzled look on his face and asked, “Why?”
Rinpoche continued to say, “Hey! It’s very easy to learn the ‘millennium turning wheel method’ and empowerment is not required. All you have to do is that when you’re chanting mantras, say the Yidam mantra or God of Wealth mantra, you rotate the Buddhist beads you’re holding in hand strongly in the air like that of ‘the cowboys’ simultaneously. That’s the millennium turning wheel method! It can work with whichever mantras chanted.”
Thinking that he had got a big reward, the lay disciple was full of joy and he thought, “As Rinpoche has already told me the pithy formula of an Esoteric method, I should go to the state of Texas to learn how to rotate a rope from ‘the cowboy’ as soon as possible so that I can make use of the ‘millennium turning wheel method’ earlier to attain achievement.”
Rinpoche hoped to use this real story to admonish us that practitioners of Esoteric Buddhism should plant their feet on solid ground. If the genesis at the beginning of learning Buddhism is thinking of a short cut to attain achievement, will the practitioner be considered as a real cultivator? As long as one wants to learn Esoteric Buddhism, one should have one’s feet planted on solid ground by taking root from the foundation and has the basic skills done thoroughly well just like the old saying, “Because immortal being, round for round fruit.” When one can devote oneself in practising the art of the ‘fundamental cause’ (the state of practising Buddhism which leads to the resulting Buddhahood), then one’s achievement will naturally be attained just as a canal is formed when water flows (when conditions are ripe, success will come). Not to say that one can scoot through a short cut using the millennium turning wheel to save time and effort which is a vain attempt to use the fastest speed as well as the easiest way (to do something without making an effort) to attain achievement. Under such a mindset, it is neither a good genesis to learn Buddhism, nor is the mentality of learning Buddhism considered as Bodhi-heart(Bodhicitta), it is an illusion-mind instead. |

The Yidam will be injured when falls? |
| A lay disciple who seldom came to the Centre had requested to learn the Yidam Sadhana lately. He asked immediately when he saw Rinpoche, “Having finished practising the Yidam Sadhana, is there any fundamental ways that I can follow after that?”
Rinpoche responded the disciple, “After practising the Yidam Sadhana, one remains in the state of three mysteries in one (i.e. the combination of the body, mouth and mind into one) and one is still the Yidam even when walking, standing, sitting and lying. However, if one is unable to sustain a strong contemplation of oneself being the Yidam for a long time, one can visualize the Yidam staying on one’s head instead frequently.”
The disciple thought for a while. He then looked very worried and became extremely serious when he asked, “Oh! Rinpoche, if I visualize the Yidam staying on my head, when I lean forward to prostrate myself before Buddhas and Bodhisattvas and press my head (against their feet) on the ground, (I’m afraid) the Yidam on my head will naturally fall to earth! The Yidam will be injured when falls! In that case, what’s to be done?”
Rinpoche smiled and said in a bantering way, “That’s easy! When you find that the Yidam on your head is going to fall down, stretch your hands forward immediately to hold the Yidam in your arms. In this way, the Yidam will feel grateful to you because you’re capable of avoiding the Yidam from falling and getting hurt! After that, put the Yidam back on your head firmly and you can continue to pay respect for Buddha.”
The disciple felt as if he had relieved of a heavy load and murmured to himself, “That’s fine!”
This time, Rinpoche said solemnly, “Have you seen too many animated films? Some of the winged angels have flown so fast that their halos(a ring of light around the head) are unable to catch up. The angels have to fly back to pick the halos with their hands and put them back on their heads. They then reduce their flying speed. OMB (Oh My Buddha), they’re cartoons only! You should not apply the actions and theories of cartoons to your ‘imagination’ and attach them to cultivation of Esoteric Buddhism!” |
